How to Help Your Dog Enjoy the Ride
Some dogs love the car, others hate it, but how can you help your dog to enjoy the freedom the open road, and therefore head off on road trips as an entire family?
Your dog is part of your brood and that means heading out for the day and going for a walk somewhere in nature. If your dog is terrified of the car or they become anxious and start fretting, the experience will be no fun for you or your dog.
So, how can you help your dog to enjoy car rides?
Consider a Crate
Not everyone likes the idea of crating their dog, but it can be a safer option, especially if your dog is prone to anxiety. Shop around for a crate which is the right size and has great safety ratings, and familiarise your dog with it beforehand. By showing your dog that this is their safe haven, they’ll enjoy car rides far more.
Let Them Explore The Car
Many dogs panic when they see a car, but if you show them there’s nothing to be scared of and allow them to explore and sniff around, they’re far more likely to calm down whenever the car comes into view. The first time they go inside, don’t turn the engine on, as the noise could frighten them, but work slowly and methodically to get them used to the car as somewhere you can all be together.
Go Somewhere Fun
Of course, dogs might associate getting in the car with going to the vet or somewhere equally as unpleasant! Head off to some fun destination the first few times they travel with you, perhaps out hiking or down to the beach. Let your dog run around, have fun and enjoy themselves, making memories together. They’re far more likely associate the car with fun after that.
Go For a Walk Beforehand
Make sure you take your dog out for a walk before you get in the car. Not only will that cut down on the need for an early toilet break, but it will also help with the release of happy hormones. This is far more likely to create a chilled out, relaxed feel. It’s a good idea to go for a walk around 15 minutes before you get in the car.
Avoid Loud Music
You might think road trip music is great fun when you’re singing aloud, but your dog’s hearing is far more sensitive. Keep the volume down and consider chill out music instead of heavy rock!
By helping your dog to relax and enjoy car time, you can head off together as a complete family!
