Does Your Faithful Friend Sense Your Feelings?
You’ve no doubt heard the phrase that dogs are loyal companions. The reason this is mentioned so often is that it’s extremely true. When people let you down, your faithful friend will be there for you. It’s also almost as if they can sense or even smell when you’re feeling down or not quite yourself too.
Have you ever returned home from a busy day and you’ve just felt low? If so, did your furry friend come over to you and show you more affection than normal? Do you remember them following you around a little more, or perhaps laying their head on your knee?
This is reported quite often, so it really does make you question whether dogs have some kind of psychic ability to recognize upset or discord in their human.
Nothing Gets Past a Dog’s Sense of Smell
The reason many people think that dogs actually smell emotions is that they’re led with their noses and their sense of smell in general. Dogs sniff when they go outside because they’re trying to assess their surroundings and identify information about which other dogs might be around.
Everything is led by their nose and as a result, they can detect specific smells which might give them clues about the emotional state of their owner. They do this by also reading into the way you move, your general demeanor and your body language.
Studies haven’t concluded a psychic ability in dogs per se, but this heightened perception of what is really going on beneath the surface does make you question whether or not your furry, loyal friend might be able to read into your thoughts and feelings a little more than they’re letting on!
At the end of the day, how dogs can smell emotions or whether they see or read into them doesn’t really matter, what matters is that they are loyal companions who offer support and calmness when things are rough. You give them a home, look after them, play with them, love them and cherish them, and in return, they give you the best support anyone, or anything, could ever give.
There is a reason why many hospitals and healthcare centers are introducing therapy dogs! It’s because spending time with an adorable pooch is enough to lower your stress and anxiety levels and help you forget the very reason why you were upset or annoyed in the first place.
It really does make you think – do we need people when we have dogs?
